Online Safety Week: Protecting Children in a Digital World

Last updated by Stephanie Rosser on Tuesday, October 21, 2025

As the first half term draws to a close, it’s a timely reminder that online risks don’t take a break. With half term, and also Halloween approaching, children may be spending more time online—sharing spooky content or facing peer pressure to join harmful challenges. The addictive nature of technology can also affect mental health, making digital safety more important than ever.

This week, we are spotlighting online safety across Essex. The campaign will share vital messages on topics like youth involved sexual images, online gaming, and digital safety for pre-schoolers. It also aims to help young people build healthy relationships in a tech-driven world.

Exploitation can happen to any child—boys and girls alike—and often begins on social media. It’s never the child’s fault. Caregivers play a key role by creating open, supportive environments where online safety is discussed regularly, just like road safety or stranger danger.

So what can we do to keep children safe online? Check parental controls, stay curious about your child’s online activities, and use resources available on our online safety pages. Concerns can be reported anonymously via Crimestoppers (0800 555111) or the Essex Police Child Exploitation hotline (01245 452058).
