Is your child starting school in September? Essex Libraries are running Big School Meet Up to allow families to meet other families with children starting school in September, listen to a storytime and get hints and tips to help prepare children for starting school. Find out more and discover local sessions -  Big School Meet Ups at Essex Libraries

In the meantime, these tips from the school readiness campaign can help make the transition to school smoother.

  • Establish a Routine: Start setting a consistent bedtime and wake-up time to help your child adjust to the school schedule.
  • Encourage Independence: Teach your child basic self-care skills like dressing themselves, using the toilet, and washing their hands.
  • Read Together: Spend time reading books with your child to develop their language skills and foster a love for learning.
  • Practice Social Skills: Arrange playdates or group activities to help your child learn to share, take turns, and interact with peers.
  • Visit the School: If possible, take your child to visit the school and meet their teacher to make the environment more familiar.
  • Talk About School: Discuss what school will be like, including the activities they'll do and the friends they'll make, to build excitement and reduce anxiety.
  • Label Belongings: Ensure all your child's belongings are labelled with their name to prevent them from getting lost and mixed up.
