63% of children learn about AI (Artificial Intelligence) through social media

Barnardos has published a new report on children’s experiences online, examining their understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The charity undertook focus groups and surveys with over 500 primary and secondary school children across Ireland, as well as gathering the views of teachers and parents.

Key concerns that children highlighted include:

  • the malicious use of AI
  • privacy concerns
  • the fear of AI ‘taking over’.

The report finds a disparity in understanding of AI across all age groups and calls on the Government to ensure the school curriculum includes practical lessons to raise children’s awareness and help protect them from potential online harms.
