Harmful Cultural Practices (also referred to as Child Abuse linked to Faith or Belief) can be physical, emotional, neglect or sexual. The National FGM Centre explains the practice in more detail here Child Abuse Linked to Faith or Belief – National FGM Centre.
Honour Based Abuse is an international term used by many cultures for justification of abuse and violence committed to protect or defend the perceived ‘honour’ of a family or community. The abuse can take many forms including physical violence, emotional abuse, coercion, threats or disownment.
Honour based abuse will often go hand in hand with forced marriages, although this is not always the case. Honour crimes and forced marriages are already covered by the law and can involve a range of criminal offences.
If you suspect someone is experiencing honour-based abuse, it's important to look out for warning signs such as unexplained injuries, depression, strict control over their movements, and isolation from friends and family.
Partners can also book onto our Honour Based Abuse/Forced Marriage & Spiritual and Ritual Abuse training which looks at the difference between arranged and forced marriage, provides an understanding of risk and safety planning, and improves cultural awareness of beliefs, superstitions and spirituality.
