Walking to and from school safely

Last updated by Stephanie Rosser on Thursday, August 21, 2025

If your child is walking to school on their own for the first time this year, here are some helpful tips to support a smooth transition and ensure their safety on the journey to and from school.

✔️Sit down and plan their route, highlighting safe places to cross
✔️Think about any friends they might travel with
✔️Practice the route together
✔️Talk about the dangers your child might come across
✔️ Devices can be a major distraction, so encourage your child to put them away and take any headphones out while crossing the road

And of course as the evenings become darker it is important to think about visibility - if possible choose a bright coat for your child to wear. If they have to wear a dark coat consider reflective strips.
