Tips for travelling to school independently

Last updated by charlotte.lang@essex.gov.uk on Wednesday, September 18, 2024

It’s almost time for schools to go back. For some parents and carers this year will be the first time their child walks or travels to school by themselves.

Here are some tips to help your child with the transition and keep them safe on their journey to and from school.

• Sit down and plan their route, highlighting safe places to cross
• Think about any friends they might travel with, whether they are walking or travelling on public transport
• Practice the route together, and if using public transport identify their stop
• Talk about the dangers your child might come across
• Devices can be a major distraction, so encourage your child to put them away and take any headphones out while crossing the road
