“Sorry doesn’t cut it – it's time to #Reflect on your behaviour”: Changing behaviours and building safer relationships

Last updated by ruth.salter@essex.gov.uk on Wednesday, February 18, 2026

Essex Police have launched the next phase of their #Reflect campaign alongside the Southend, Essex and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board (SETDAB), they’re sending a clear message: change is possible, but it starts with acknowledging behaviour, taking responsibility, and seeking support.

Reflect speaks directly to people who may be using harmful behaviours, whether coercive, controlling, physical, verbal, sexual, financial or emotional. It also highlights the more subtle behaviours that are often minimised or overlooked: the ‘jokes’ that cut deep, routinely checking a partner’s phone, or comments intended to undermine during an argument. These behaviours are harmful, and they can escalate over time if left unchallenged.

  • If you recognise these patterns in your behaviour, seek help and make positive change. #Reflect on your behaviour and reach out to Essex Compass.
