World Suicide Prevention Day 2026

10 September 2026

Suicide is an important public health issue that can have significant social, emotional and economic consequences. An estimated 720,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year, and the effects extend far beyond the individual, impacting families, friends and communities. Addressing suicide remains a priority for communities and organisations around the world.

Changing the narrative on suicide aims to inspire individuals, communities, organisations, and governments to engage in open and honest discussions about suicide and suicidal behaviour. By initiating these vital conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness, and create better cultures of understanding and support.

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was established in 2003 in conjunction with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is a significant advocacy and communication-based event aimed at reaching national organisations, governments and the general public, giving a singular message that suicide can be prevented.
