DfE - Child welfare - Growing up in the 2020s

28 October 2026

The Department for Education has published findings from a survey of 12 to 13-year-olds growing up in the 2020s. The survey forms part of a national study following young people in England from age 12 and 13 through secondary school and into early adulthood. Findings show most young people reported positive relationships with family and friends, generally high life satisfaction and positive experiences of school. However, around one in four young people met criteria for a probable mental health disorder and one in five met the threshold for persistent absence from school. The report highlights the need to understand both strengths and challenges to support young people effectively.
