Black History Month 2026: Honouring Our Communities
October marks Black History Month, a time to celebrate the lives, experiences and contributions of Black people who have helped shape our communities across generations. This year's theme, Honouring Our Communities, recognises the everyday individuals whose commitment, care and leadership make a positive difference to the lives of others. This reflects the wider Essex message that Black history is Essex history, recognising both the county's rich heritage and the diverse communities that continue to shape Essex today.
At the Essex Safeguarding Children Board, Black History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of ensuring every child feels seen, valued, and understood. For children in care and those supported by safeguarding services, a strong sense of identity, belonging and cultural heritage can play an important role in their wellbeing. We recognise the valuable contribution of foster carers, practitioners, volunteers, and community members from Black communities who help support, protect and champion children and young people across Essex. Through working together, we can continue to create environments where all children feel safe, respected, and able to thrive.
