Black History Month (BHM) is celebrated in the UK each October and gives us the chance to recognise and celebrate the contributions of Black people to society, culture, and history. The national theme this year is Reclaiming Narratives which focuses on correcting historical inaccuracies, expanding accounts and challenging narratives.
Exhibitions and plaques celebrating leading Black figures and highlighting the harrowing legacy of the enslavement of African people will be part of Black History Month. First run in the UK in October 1987, Black History Month is the largest and most widespread celebration of Black culture and the historical and contemporary contributions of black Britons.
Many organisations are hosting events throughout the month - find out what is going on where you work or in your community. Actively participating in these opportunities is one of the steps we can all take to be a good ally to colleagues, increasing our cultural awareness and understanding the experiences of others.
