Modern slavery and exploitation

Last updated by Stephanie.Rosser@essex.gov.uk on Monday, May 22, 2023

Unseen has published an annual report for its UK modern slavery and exploitation helpline. Findings from the helpline 2022 assessment include: the helpline identified 6,516 ‘potential victims’; just over 8% of all modern slavery cases raised by the helpline indicated that the people involved were under the age of 18; and the most common form of exploitation experienced by under-18-year-olds was labour exploitation.

Recommendations include:

  • the need to raise awareness of the true size of the problem
  • better support for people who have experienced modern slavery
  • more resources to target the criminals behind the exploitation.
