Safer Sleeping for Babies
Sleeping Baby

While there is a decreasing trend nationally, there has been a marked rise in the number of Sudden Unexpected Deaths in Infants (SUDIs) in recent years in Southend, Essex and Thurrock.

No evidence has been identified to suggest a particular cause for the recent rise but there are certain co-sleeping risk factors, including:

  • co-sleeping with a regular smoker
  • co-sleeping on a sofa
  • co-sleeping after consuming alcohol or drugs
  • If the baby was born prematurely or had low birth weight

The ongoing campaign aims to raise awareness of co-sleeping risks and promote safer sleep habits.

Parents and carers are encouraged to seek support and advice from their midwife or health visitor or online resources. This includes safer sleep environments but also things like settling your baby, getting rest and seeking support to go smoke free.

Professionals that work closely with families with young children are also encouraged to use available resources to support them in discussing safer sleep habits and co-sleeping risks.

The advice is particularly prominent in the run up to the festive season or other holidays when families might be going away or staying with friends and relatives so children may not be in their usual sleeping places.

Easy read cards and campaign posters are available to download on this page.

If you would like any additional cards or posters, please contact escb@essex.gov.uk and we will happily send them out.
